True Stories told Live
Since 2012, Couch Stories has been a beloved Nelson storytelling staple—offering real people, raw experiences, and unforgettable moments shared live, without notes.
Now making its long-awaited debut at the Theatre Royal, this years’ Couch Stories dives into the wonderfully awkward world of human error with the theme “Oh, Bugger!”
From catastrophes and fails to missed connections and foot-in-mouth moments, ten local storytellers step into the spotlight to share tales of unexpected twists, tumbles, and turning points. These aren’t just stories of failure—they’re windows into resilience, humour, vulnerability, growth, and sometimes glorious chaos. There are no props. No scripts. No second takes. Just brave voices bringing lived experience to the stage—and inviting you to laugh, cringe, and reflect right along with them.
Join us for a night of true stories that prove life’s “Oh, Bugger!” moments are what make it truly unforgettable.
Producer and Host, Jo Ann Firestone was born in California and moved to New Zealand in the 1980s, starting on Stewart Island before settling in Nelson via Dunedin.
Her radio career began at Radio One in the ’90s, followed by roles at Radio Works and Fresh FM from 2002. Inspired by the many people she has met over the years and the vibrant voices of Nelson/Tasman, she launched Couch Stories in 2012 along with Co-Creator Ro Cambridge. The show is a true product of the region—Jo Ann believes it couldn’t have thrived anywhere else
Co-Host John Pinel hails from the UK and has called New Zealand home for over two decades.
An English language teacher for more than 25 years, he joined the Couch Stories whānau in 2016—as a storyteller, photographer, and audio recorder. Originally Jo Ann’s neighbour, he eventually gave in to her persuasive powers and began co-hosting in 2019, stepping fully into the role in 2021. He brings heart, humour, and a sharp ear to every show.
