Artistic Director - Nelson Arts Festival
With our current Artistic Director wrapping up at the end of this year, we, the Nelson Festivals Trust, are looking for our next Artistic Director to ignite creativity and connection in our city and region through transformative arts experiences and continue, and to inspire and innovate a festival that has significant cultural impact.
Our next Artistic Director will:
- Lead the next iteration of the creative legacy
- Shape, curate and deliver the artistic programme and the Trust's vision of 'a multiverse of audacious, accessible and awe-inspiring arts experiences enriching connection and care with the world around us'.
Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role:
Our key offering Nelson Arts Festival continues as a bright beacon for the arts in Aotearoa and a strong pou for the Whakatū creative community. Each spring we curate, craft and nurture 11 days of unmissable arts experiences for and with the people of Whakatū Nelson and Te Tauihu (and beyond).
Having recently celebrated the 30-year milestone in our festival history, the Artistic Director will lead the next iteration of our creative legacy and make new memories for our whole community.

You embrace all art forms, spark innovative ideas, encourage artistic risk-taking and cultivate a vibrant creative ecosystem. You naturally bring people together and are committed to diversity and inclusion. You can amplify existing stories and talent as well as celebrate the new and bold. You are committed to honouring and upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, caring for our environment and striving for sustainable and inclusive practices. You know how to push boundaries with consideration and use creativity as catalyst for change. You have proven leadership in creative programming and producing, including commissioning new works, strong networks and relationships with Aotearoa artists, companies, presenters and festivals, as well as a history of securing leading artists.
You will have autonomy to shape the artistic program and vision, selecting performers and artists that align with the Trust’s values. You will work closely with a passionate and incredibly talented team from programming, technical, delivery and marketing workflows. Reporting to the General Manager, you will engage with various external stakeholders, including artists, venues, partners and the wider community.

Board Members - Nelson Festivals Trust
This year, the Nelson Arts Festival turns thirty and as we, the Nelson Festivals Trust, step bravely into the next three decades, we are looking for two new Trust members to help deliver on our refreshed strategy which sets an exciting and solid foundation for the future, as well as to support the team in staging a programme of unmissable arts activation that will enrich the people of our region.
At the core of this offering is the Nelson Arts Festival, the longest-running annual regional arts festival in Aotearoa, taking place annually in October across Whakatū and Te Tauihu.
This an unpaid, voluntary governance role. Board members are not required to be involved with the delivery of any of our programmes but to bring their governance skills to the table.
We meet monthly as a board and also have working groups aligned to our strategy. These working groups meet as required between board meetings.
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
- A passion for the arts
- Governance experience
- An understanding of Tikanga Māori
- Strategic planning skills
- A strong understanding of financial governance and commercial experience
- Have strong community connections in the Nelson/Tasman region
We are particularly keen to encourage applications from tāngata whenua and younger members of the community as well as those representing the diversity of cultures who call our region home.
